Cancelling Listing Services
This article outlines the standard operating procedures for cancelling listing services. Use this guide to determine the correct workflow based on whether a business location is closing permanently or if you are simply stopping service management for an active location.
Scenario 1: Permanent Location Closure
When a location closes permanently, its listings must be updated across the publisher network to reflect the closure before services can be cancelled. This ensures customers see accurate information while publishers process the status change.
Important: Services will not be cancelled until all listings are fully updated to show the closure. Removing a listing in Yext does not instantly delete it everywhere; most publishers phase out permanently closed listings over a period ranging from immediate removal up to three or more months.
Pre-Cancellation Steps
Complete the following steps in order within the Knowledge Graph before requesting cancellation:- Mark as Closed: Under the Internal Use Only section of the entity, set the Closed field to Yes and save. (Note: Not all publishers support a closed status).
- Set Hours to Closed: Open the Hours field, set every day of the week to Closed, and save.
- Update Business Name: Open the Name field and append - CLOSED to the end of the existing business name.
- Update Business Description: Open the Business Description field and add a note stating that the location is permanently closed.
- Force Sync Listings:
- Go to Listings in the main dashboard menu > All Listings.
- Under Entity, select the closing location.
- In the bottom pop-up bar, select Force Sync All to push the closure details across publishers.
- Confirm Sync: Verify that all updates are reflected across listings prior to submitting your cancellation request.
Recommended Optional Updates
To ensure a clean user experience, consider the following non-mandatory steps:- Website Field: Update the URL to direct visitors to your main corporate page.
- Featured Message: Add a short note regarding the closure and set the Featured Message URL to direct to a nearby active location or corporate page.
Warning: Do not archive the entity. Archived entities cannot be recovered. Keeping the entity intact preserves its data if the location reopens or if reference data is needed in the future.
Scenario 2: Discontinuing Management for an Active Entity
If a location remains open but you no longer require listing management services for it, do not mark the entity as closed. Simply submit a cancellation request to the support team.
